US Air Force B-52s conduct first-ever live weapons drop in Sweden

Two US Air Force B-52H Stratofortresses executed the aircraft’s first-ever live weapons drop in Sweden during Bomber Task Force mission VIKING NEBULA on 11 March.

During the operation, two Swedish JAS 39 Gripens provided escort for the aircraft as they proceeded to the Vidsel Test Range, where they deployed GBU-38 joint direct attack munitions. Ground support was rendered by US and Swedish Joint Terminal Attack Controllers. This mission enhanced the collaboration between air and ground forces, honing precision strike capabilities within a new and intricate training setting.

Additionally, the operation featured a low-formation flyover of the Swedish Parliament to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Sweden’s NATO membership.

The B-52s and their aircrew are presently stationed with the 69th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron at RAF Fairford, England, where they are actively conducting operations in conjunction with NATO Allies and partners throughout Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, thereby strengthening collective effectiveness and enhancing integration.

VIKING NEBULA represents the eleventh operation completed during this iteration of the Bomber Task Force.
