Norway has deployed F-35 multi-role aircraft and National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) to Poland to help protect the airspace over Rzeszów Airport, a key NATO logistics hub within the Alliance’s integrated air and missile defence framework.
In conjunction with the deployment of aircraft and anti-aircraft systems, Norwegian Defence Minister Bjorn Arild Gram announced that around 100 Norwegian soldiers would also be stationed in Rzeszów. Their role will encompass providing support to the forces already present and ensuring the security of equipment shipments being transported to Ukraine via this logistical centre.
“Poland is making a tremendous effort to ensure that both civilian and military supplies reach Ukraine. The airport is also central to the medical evacuation efforts that Norway is responsible for”, says Gram.
“‘Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have demonstrated the value of air defence, and the Norwegian contribution in Poland is highly appreciated. We are doing this primarily for Ukraine and Poland, but it also shows that we stand by our commitments within NATO”.
NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence
NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence (NATO IAMD) is an ongoing mission aimed at safeguarding the territory, populations, and forces of the Alliance from any air or missile threats or attacks. This mission employs a comprehensive 360-degree strategy, specifically designed to counter all forms of air and missile threats originating from various strategic directions, including those posed by both state and non-state actors.
To achieve this objective, it encompasses a range of measures, such as continuous air policing and ballistic missile defence, which serve to deter potential threats or mitigate their impact. NATO IAMD is a crucial component of NATO’s overall deterrence and defence strategy, enhancing the Alliance’s collective security and operational flexibility, including its capacity to reinforce deployments and deliver a strategic response.
