UK deploys forces to Middle East amid rising tensions

UK military personnel are currently being deployed to assist British embassies and provide operational support for British nationals in Lebanon in the event of a rapid deterioration of the security situation as tensions in the region escalate following the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah military chief Fuad Shukr.

Royal Marines Commandos stationed in Cyprus are on standby to rescue UK citizens stranded in Lebanon, prepared for a “non-combatant evacuation” mission at short notice if called upon. The Royal Air Force has also put Typhoon fighter aircraft and transport helicopters based in Cyprus on standby.

Additionally, the landing ship RFA Cardigan Bay and the Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan are already stationed in the eastern Mediterranean.

The UK government advises British nationals not to travel to Lebanon and recommends those currently in the country to leave as soon as possible while commercial travel options are still available. Due to the evolving situation, exit routes, including roads, may be affected or closed with little warning. British nationals are strongly encouraged to depart while commercial travel options are still viable.

UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, said: “Tensions are high, and the situation could deteriorate rapidly. While we are working round the clock to strengthen our consular presence in Lebanon, my message to British nationals there is clear – leave now.”

“A widening of this conflict is in nobody’s interest – the consequences could be catastrophic. That’s why we continue to call for de-escalation and a diplomatic solution.”

UK Defence Secretary, John Healey, stated: “Our Armed Forces will always step up to support British citizens around the world and reinforce regional stability with their professionalism and bravery.”

“As I told leaders in the Middle East this week, de-escalation must be the primary focus in the region, and we are urging all to dial down tensions. There must be an end to the fighting, an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and a diplomatic path to peace and security.”
