MBDA unveils new VSHORAD at Farnborough 2024

MBDA is presenting its new MANPADS (Man Portable Air Defence System) VSHORAD (Very Short Range Air Defence) solution at the Farnborough International Airshow for the first time. The system is currently being developed for the Italian Army and will soon be available for export customers.

The new VSHORAD missile is a high-speed, fire-and-forget, all-weather interceptor, featuring a seeker with advanced image processing capabilities. It is capable of engaging fighters, helicopters, and small drones. Its versatile design allows for easy integration onto both current (VTLM2 by IDV with Leonardo turret, as seen on MBDA stand) and future vehicles equipped with automated turrets.

Due to its portable nature, MBDA states that this VSHORAD solution is ideal for paratroopers and amphibious units, providing a tactical edge when deployed on military vehicles. Additionally, this VSHORAD system will be a key component of Sky Warden, MBDA’s adaptable, scalable, and upgradable flagship system for countering unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS).

The development of the system is in response to an operational requirement from the Italian Army for a man-portable air defence missile with very short-range capabilities, which was expressed last year. The system’s characteristics and performance meet all NATO standards.

Leveraging MBDA’s expertise in designing and developing air defence systems, the new missile will enhance the company’s portfolio for a multi-layer air defence capability in Europe, covering very short ranges up to future Anti-Ballistic-Hypersonic Defense.
