BAE Systems to produce additional M109A7 Self-Propelled Howitzers for US Army

BAE Systems has received a USD 493 million contract to continue producing M109A7 Self-Propelled Howitzers (SPH) and M992A3 Ammunition Carriers for the US Army.

“We are focused on producing and fielding modern artillery capabilities that provide the Army with overmatch in range, accuracy, and lethality,” said Dan Furber, director of ground vehicle production for BAE Systems’ Combat Mission Systems business.

“This contract ensures the ABCT will sustain operations of one of the most survivable indirect fire support systems for years to come.”

BAE stated that the contract award includes production and delivery between August 2025 and July 2026.

The M109A7 is the most recent addition to the BAE Systems M109 family of artillery systems, serving as the principal indirect fire support mechanism for the US Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs).

It retains the main armament and cab design of the Paladin M109A6 while integrating modern chassis components that are standard in the Bradley vehicle. This enhanced chassis design not only increases survivability but also ensures compatibility with current ABCT systems, thereby lowering operational sustainability expenses by substituting outdated components.

The M109A7’s “shoot and scoot” capability allows it to avoid counterbattery fire using an onboard position navigation system and fire control system capable of executing missions digitally and via secure voice command.

Equipped with an upgraded, 675 HP electronically controlled version of the BFV standard V903 engine and an improved HMPT-800 transmission, the M109A7 has faster acceleration for rapid displacement and can keep pace with the manoeuvre forces it supports.

In motion, the M109A7 can receive a fire mission, compute firing data, transition from travelling configuration to firing configuration, point its cannon, and fire within 60 seconds. Operating day or night, in all weather conditions, the M109A7 provides timely and accurate fires with a range of over 30km.
