A report issued 14 March by SpetsTechnoExport – part of Ukraine’s Ukroboronprom – stated that the company had supplied Ukrainian Ground Forces with unused secondhand BMP-1 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV) in 2018.
The report said that: “The delivered BMPs have never been in service, and were stored at the capacities of licensed enterprises of the European Union. During 2017-2018, BMP-1 completed a major overhaul with the replacement of all the necessary units, in accordance with the technical specifications of the EU repair factories.”
On 12 April 2018, Jane’s Defence Weekly reported that Ukraine had taken delivery of an unspecified number of BMP-1AK IFVs from Polish company Wtorplast. It also reported that according to sources, over 50 BMP-1 variants from both sides had been lost during the war in Donbass, many by the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
