The US has announced that it will help facilitate the transfer of Soviet-made T-72 main battle tanks (MBT) to Ukraine as the country gears up for heavy armour battles in the east with Russian forces.
The New York Times citing a US defence official reported that the transfers, requested by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, would begin soon, likely in days and not weeks but declined to say how many tanks would be sent or from which countries they would come.
Ukraine’s neighbours that operate and have T-72 MBTs in storage include Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovakia.
On 1 April the German Ministry of Defense approved the transfer of 58 East German-built BMP-1 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV) which are currently held by a private company in the Czech Republic.
