Slovakia considers CV90120-T light tank over Leopard 2A8 MBT due to financial constraints

Slovakia’s Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák has indicated that the nation might choose to procure CV90120-T light tanks rather than the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank (MBT) in a shift driven by apprehensions regarding the substantial expenses linked to the acquisition of fully operational MBTs.

Slovakia has pledged to NATO to form a mechanised brigade, which entails the replacement of its outdated tank fleet and in line with this initiative, placed an order for 152 CV9035 infantry fighting vehicles, which will be co-produced in collaboration with the Slovak industry. The existing fleet comprises approximately 30 obsolete T-72M1 tanks and 15 Leopard 2A4s acquired from Germany through an exchange programme aimed at supporting Ukraine.

The Slovak Ministry of Defence intends to increase its current tank battalion from 30 to 52 vehicles and establish a second battalion. Consequently, Slovakia will need a total of 104 combat tanks to fulfil its operational objectives. Initially, the Leopard 2A8 was the preferred option, with plans for a joint procurement alongside the German Ministry of Defence. However, the estimated cost of over EUR 2 billion for more than 100 Leopard 2A8 MBTs has led to a reconsideration of this choice.

Minister Kaliňák pointed out that the price of a single Leopard 2A8 is around EUR 25 million, a figure considered excessive for Slovakia’s defence budget. As a result, Slovakia is now investigating the CV90120-T, a lighter and more economically viable alternative provided by BAE Systems. Launched in 1998, the CV90120-T has not yet received any orders despite ongoing improvements. Its latest model is priced at EUR 11.5 million per unit, making it considerably less expensive than the Leopard 2A8.

Opting for the CV90120-T could also yield additional advantages, such as fostering industrial cooperation and standardising the fleet with the CV9035 infantry fighting vehicles already ordered. This potential alignment may improve operational efficiency and strengthen domestic production capabilities. Slovakia’s ultimate decision is anticipated to weigh affordability, military needs, and strategic alliances, as the country strives to modernise its armed forces while fulfilling NATO obligations.

CV90120 fire-support vehicle

The CV90120 features a lightweight design that enhances its manoeuvrability on the battlefield compared to conventional tanks, while still delivering comparable firepower. Its main armament is a formidable tank gun, enabling the agile CV90120 to effectively engage any modern threat with various options for a 120mm gun available. The vehicle’s low ground pressure, rubber tracks, and active damping system facilitate its movement to critical locations, allowing it to confront any adversary on the battlefield. Weighing between 26 and over 40 tonnes, the CV90120 maintains a high operational tempo consistent with the rest of the CV90 family.

The flexibility inherent in the CV90 family has permitted the integration of advanced sensor-based protection systems. Unlike many armored vehicles that depend solely on traditional steel armor, the CV90120 is equipped with a Defensive Aid Suite (DAS) that incorporates both soft and hard-kill capabilities. This system identifies potential threats, issues warnings through the Vehicle Information System (VIS), deploys countermeasures, and assists the driver with navigation instructions to minimize the likelihood of being struck.

Additionally, the CV90120 is equipped with the cutting-edge ADAPTIV cloaking system, which helps conceal the vehicle from potential threats by modifying its thermal signature. Together with its other defensive mechanisms, this ensures the crew’s survivability against contemporary battlefield dangers.

Moreover, the CV90120 offers these advanced capabilities at a significantly lower cost than traditional tanks. With a weight that is half that of standard tanks, its fuel consumption and wear on components are considerably reduced. This efficiency enables armed forces to deliver optimal protection and armament for their personnel while maximizing cost-effectiveness. With its primary weapon, enhanced hunter-killer capabilities, and the mobility characteristic of the CV90 family, the CV90120 stands as a combat vehicle that enhances crew survivability and ensures mission success.
