BAE Systems to produce additional CATV for US Army

BAE Systems has secured contracts totaling USD 68 million for the production of an additional 44 Cold Weather All-Terrain Vehicles (CATV) for the US Army.

This order comprises a USD 48 million extension to the existing full-rate production contract, which was granted in August 2022, along with a USD 20 million allocation for funding in 2025.

The CATV is a member of the BvS10 family, derived from the unarmoured Beowulf variant. In 2022, the US Army chose Beowulf to succeed the Bv206 for operations in Arctic conditions, delivering a contemporary ground platform solution for prolonged missions and force projection in the area.

Beowulf is a dual-body amphibious vehicle, recognized for its superior tactical mobility among its peers. It incorporates established technology, engineered to deliver comprehensive operational support in environments where other vehicles may falter. The design is founded on battle-tested driveline technologies that form the basis of the BvS10 family of vehicles currently deployed globally. This exceptional lineage ensures reliability, durability, and high system availability.

Beowulf is manufactured by BAE Systems Hägglunds in northern Sweden, which contributes valuable expertise in Arctic operational conditions.

“The CATV provides a dynamic combination of mobility and flexibility to the U.S. Army enabling rapid response in all terrains,” said Dean Medland, vice president of Sustainment & International at BAE Systems. “We are proud to support additional CATV production for the U.S. Army and are confident that the vehicle’s go-anywhere ability and modular design will meet their future needs, allowing them to carry out a range of missions from military operations to humanitarian assistance and disaster response.”

BvS10

The BvS10 family of vehicles, which includes the armoured BvS10 and the unarmoured BvS10 Beowulf, is designed to navigate challenging terrains that would impede other vehicles. These vehicles are also capable of conducting amphibious operations. The various models within the BvS10 family have been developed in close collaboration with BAE’s clients to meet their unique mission requirements. Each variant emphasizes flexibility, enabling customers to customize their fleets for specific operational needs. To date, BAE have produced over 40 different variants of all-terrain vehicles.

The armored BvS10 encompasses the following variants: Ambulance, Crew Support Weapon, Mortar, Armored Personnel Carrier, LOG/Flatbed, Remote Weapon Station, Counter Battery RADAR, Missiles and Repair and Recovery.

These armoured BvS10 vehicles are designed to provide protection against ballistic threats and anti-tank mines. Additionally, this family of vehicles is air transportable via CH-47, C-130, or similar aircraft. They are engineered for seamless integration with a diverse array of weaponry, while also maintaining the adaptability to be equipped for future mission requirements.

The BvS10 fleet is designed for ease of maintenance and support, and BAE Systems offers further assistance through training, maintenance, management, and enhancements. Our clients rely on our customized solutions to ensure that the BvS10 consistently meets and exceeds expectations throughout its operational lifespan.

Currently, the BvS10 is in service with Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
