Russian military transport aircraft crashes in Ivanovo

A Russian Ilyushin Il-76 military transport plane crashed in the Ivanovo region of Russia, near its home base on 12 March. The incident was captured in numerous photos and videos and shared on social media.

It appears that one of the D-30 engines of the Il-76 caught fire and detached from the aircraft mid-air, leading to the plane’s descent.

The Russian Ministry of Defence has confirmed that an Il-76 military plane crashed. The eight crew members and seven passengers who were on board were killed.

Safety incidents involving Russian military and civilian aircraft have increased significantly in the past year due to the inability of airlines in the country to properly maintain their aeroplanes. Western sanctions have made it difficult for Russian carriers to acquire spare parts, but they have continued to operate planes despite the considerable safety risks involved.
