BAE Systems Hägglunds orders additional Saab UTAAS for CV90s

Saab has secured a SEK 880 million contract for the Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System (UTAAS) sight and fire control system intended for the Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) from BAE Systems Hägglunds.

“UTAAS is a versatile sight and fire control system for tanks and combat vehicles. It provides high hit probability against all ground targets, as well as helicopters and high-speed aircraft. This is a much-desired capability by armed forces worldwide”, says Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.

The UTAAS serves as a multifunctional sight and fire control system designed for tanks and combat vehicles. It ensures a high probability of hitting various ground targets, in addition to effectively engaging helicopters and fast-moving aircraft.

The modular architecture of UTAAS provides users with a range of performance options and opportunities for upgrades. All channel beam paths pass through a single aperture, ensuring excellent system stability without the necessity for realignment.

The independent line of sight principle allows the operator to keep the target centred in the reticle throughout the entire aiming and laser range-finding process, eliminating the need for re-aiming. Gun-laying is automatically managed by the fire-control computer. The design of the top module facilitates significant deflection angles in both azimuth and elevation, which are crucial for effectively engaging fast-moving aircraft.

The low-hazard laser rangefinder features an adjustable repetition frequency, allowing it to be tailored to meet diverse operational needs. Multiple anti-laser eye protection techniques can be utilized within the sight. For night-time and all-weather functionality, the system can be outfitted with a selection of third-generation thermal imaging devices.

Additionally, the system can be adapted for different weapon systems and seamlessly integrated with command and control frameworks. It also includes an interface for programming smart ammunition units.

Currently, the UTAAS is operational in Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Estonia, and Ukraine, all utilizing the CV90. In the near future, Slovakia and the Czech Republic will also receive the CV90 equipped with UTAAS.
