Swedish defence company Saab has secured a supplementary order for the Gripen C/D contract from Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), amounting to SEK 466 million.
This extension encompasses various significant updates and research pertaining to future air-to-air and air-to-ground missile systems.
The company stated that the integration of new missile systems will significantly improves Gripen C/D’s operational capabilities and that the contract extension will serve to ensure that Gripen C/D remains a cornerstone of Sweden’s military capabilities for many years to come.
“The extension of the Gripen C/D contract marks an important step forward for our defence,” says Lars Tossman, Head of Saab’s Aeronautics business area. “The integration of new advanced missile systems demonstrates our commitment to delivering high-quality solutions. We are proud to contribute to Sweden’s defence capability through this contract.”
JAS 39 Gripen
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a lightweight, single-engine, supersonic multirole fighter aircraft produced by the Swedish aerospace and defence firm Saab AB. This aircraft features a delta wing and canard design, characterized by relaxed stability and fly-by-wire control systems.
The later variants are fully compatible with NATO standards. As of 2020, over 271 units of the Gripen, across all variants from A to F, have been delivered.
Adaptable to various missions and environments, it can perform air-to-air, air-to-ground, and reconnaissance tasks, and can operate from short runways and road bases.
