Oshkosh Defense has announced that the US Army Contracting Command – Detroit Arsenal (ACC-DTA) has awarded the company a five-year contract for the Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles (FHTV) V programme.
This Fixed Price with Economic Price Adjustment Requirements contract is estimated to be worth USD 1.54 billion, based on assessed quantities. It enables Oshkosh to persist in providing new and refurbished Heavy Tactical Vehicles along with their corresponding trailers until 2031.
The fleet of Oshkosh FHTV encompasses the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT A4), the Palletized Load System (PLS A1), the PLS Trailer, and the Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET A1). These robust platforms are designed for adaptability, offering the necessary payload, protection, and mobility to assist combat units in the most challenging conditions. As of now, Oshkosh has manufactured over 71,000 upgraded heavy tactical vehicles and trailers for the U.S. military and its partner nations.

Oshkosh plans to enhance the FHTV fleet by implementing cost-effective and focused upgrades aimed at modernizing the vehicles, prolonging their lifespan, and lowering operational expenses. The sophisticated design of the FHTV facilitates the smooth incorporation of new features, including drive-by-wire technology, Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), electrification, export power capabilities, and modifications for improved fuel efficiency and demand reduction.
“The evolution of the FHTV through technical insertions and recapitalization is a testament to our innovation and focus on increased capabilities,” continued Williams. “By integrating new technologies into the FHTV fleet, we are not only enhancing operational efficiency but also future proofing our vehicles to meet the evolving needs of the Warfighter.”
In June 2024, as part of the FHTV IV contract extension, the US Army awarded a number of contract modifications valued at $231.9 million order for modernized trucks, kits and kit installs. The US Army can begin buying vehicles on the FHTV V contract in August 2024.
