On 29 July, the Duesseldorf-based group Rheinmetall celebrated the official takeover of its new state-of-the-art 30mm ammunition factory in Várpalota, Hungary. The ceremony took place in the presence of the Hungarian Minister of Defence, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, and the CEO of Rheinmetall AG, Armin Papperger.
The company stated that the new production facility in Várpalota represents a significant milestone in its expansion strategy and demonstrates the company’s commitment to providing advanced technologies to enhance the defence capabilities of its partners.
The facility is specifically designed to manufacture 30mm ammunition for the KF41 Lynx infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), which will be constructed in Zalaegerszeg and supplied to the Hungarian armed forces. Production at the Várpalota factory is set to commence in October 2024.
Additionally, the facility will also produce ammunition for battle tanks and artillery, as well as igniters in its second phase. Upon completion of the final expansion stage, the company site will encompass approximately 150 hectares.
In his opening speech, Armin Papperger highlighted the importance of the new factory for Rheinmetall and the site in Hungary: “The opening of this state-of-the-art ammunition factory in Várpalota is a clear signal to our commitment concerning innovation and quality. This facility will not only strengthen the defence capabilities of our global partners and in Hungary, but will also contribute to the economic development of the region.”
The new factory in Várpalota is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and will create over 200 jobs in the region, significantly contributing to the local economy. The production of the Lynx IFV and other Lynx models will also bolster the development of the Hungarian defence industry. By doing so, Rheinmetall is upholding its tradition of enhancing global security through technological innovation and strong partnerships.
