Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have launched ballistic missile attacks on northern Iraq claiming to have targeted an Israeli “spy headquarters” in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region.
The strikes have occurred amidst apprehensions regarding the intensification of a conflict that has extended across the Middle East since the commencement of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas which began on 7 October with a large-scale terrorist attack on Israel which killed over 1,400 civilians and military personnel. Iran’s proxies in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen have also become involved in the conflict.
Iraq’s foreign ministry released a statement on Tuesday, condemning Iran’s “aggression” on Erbil, which resulted in civilian casualties within residential areas. The ministry emphasized that these actions are a direct violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and the security of its people. To address this matter, the Iraqi government intends to take all necessary legal measures, including lodging a complaint with the United Nations Security Council, as stated in the official statement.
The US has condemned the missile attacks calling them “a reckless and imprecise set of strikes”.
