US to send ATACMS to Ukraine

According to NBC News on Friday, US President Joe Biden informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the United States will provide a limited number of MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS).

Three U.S. officials and a congressional official who are familiar with the discussions shared this information, but they were not allowed to speak publicly and did not disclose any timeline.

Ukraine has been hoping to receive long-range missiles, particularly the Army Tactical Missile System, to aid in its ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces. However, the U.S. has postponed its decision due to supply shortages and concerns about potential escalation with Russia.

The officials who spoke to NBC News did not provide any information about when the missiles would be delivered or when a public announcement would be made.

ATACMS is a long-range guided missile that gives operational commanders the immediate firepower to win the deep battle. Each ATACMS missile is packaged in a MLRS look-alike launch pod and is fired from the MLRS Family of Launchers. The missile carries a WDU18, 500-lb class blast fragmentation warhead and has a maximum range of 300 km.
