Slovakia is considering sending its fleet of 11 Mig-29 fighter aircraft to Ukraine, Slovak Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad announced on 25 July.
Nad said, “we can discuss the future” of his country’s MiG-29 fleet after they’re grounded “most probably” by the end of August. “Politically, yes, I can tell you there’s a positive attitude of helping Ukrainians with Mi-29s.”
Slovakia has already negotiated with NATO allies the Czech Republic and Poland to police Slovak air space from the beginning of September.
Slovakia ordered 14 F-16 fighters from the United States in 2018 to replace its ageing MiG fleet. The first F-16s were scheduled to arrive this year however, the delivery has been pushed back until 2024.
